| Nimbus 24" MUni |
My offroad unicycle is a 24" Nimbus MUni. It's a high quality MUni built to take the roughest trails I can throw at it. Comparing it to a mountain bike, it's about the same level as a good quality Deore equipped MTB, meaning it's got all good quality, durable parts that won't hold me back and are also compatible with any upgrades I might want to make. I've been riding my 20" street unicycle for a few months now, and this is my first offroad MUni. Here's my first impression:
Wheel/tire: I chose the 24", though this is also available in 26" and 29" versions. The wheel is built to be bombproof, with a fat, eyleted rim and beefy 13 guage spokes; I don't expect to have any problems with this wheel, especially in the 24" version. The stock tire is the Duro Wildlife Leapard 24X3.0, and rolls over and soaks up bumps in all it's fatty goodness, as long as having great grip on mud, dirt and stones.
Seat; It came stock with the Nimbus gel saddle, which is quite thick with not-too-squishy gel that is much more supportive than I expected, it really soaks up the bumps without being too soft. The seatpost has height markings, making it easier to dial in the saddle height. The double-throw quick release seat clamp can also be tightened with a hex key, making it more useful in keeping the seat aligned.
Cranks/pedals: The 150mm Nimbus Venture ISIS cranks look really beefy and well made, and feel like a good length to start off with. The pedals are good quality plastic BMX/downhill style, with strips of metal pins; they are grabby enough for me right now, but it's not too difficult to reposition my feet.
Frame: The steel Nimbus MUni frame is rigid, straight, welds are nice and clean and the bearing cups are machined rather than stamped, as well as being equipped with Magura brake mounts. The only flaw is the paint, which is thin and rough, not really what I'd expect with the quality of this frame and the components.
Overall, it feels like a really solid tank of a unicycle. It's easy to find my balance, it turns well and feels very agile in general. I will probably swap out some parts, especially tires, but so far it works well for me as it is.
Cheers to UDC UK for getting it to me all the way in Italy in under a week!
